Day 2--3: Observation + Gentle Guidance

~2 min read The Art of Domestic Harmony

By Day 2 and 3, the initial jitters have hopefully settled a bit. Now, the focus shifts to learning by observing:

Let them shadow and observe: Have the new hire observe an experienced staff member or yourself doing key tasks. If you have a trusted senior staff, pairing them can work wonders ("Watch how Asha ji organises the morning routine, then you'll try tomorrow"). Humans learn a lot by watching, and it eases them in.

Encourage questions: Tell them it's okay to ask, "Is this the right way to do it?" Better a question now than a mistake later. Some may be shy — notice if they hesitate and gently ask, "Anything confusing so far that I can clarify?"

Allow room for mistakes: Explicitly say, "It's your second day, it's okay if not everything is perfect. We'll get it right together." This reduces the fear of failure, which ironically helps them perform better. If a mistake happens (and it probably will, whether a small spill or a mis-timed task), use calm correction: "No problem, let's do it this way instead." Your reaction to the first mistakes will set the tone for their entire tenure. Will mistakes be met with teaching or with anger? Show it's the former.

Provide non-verbal aids: If applicable, introduce any written notes, handbooks, or task cards you have. For instance, if you have a cleaning checklist or a sample meal plan, give it to them on Day 2 so they can start getting familiar. Not everyone learns best through listening — some prefer to read or refer to a list. This also shows you have systems, which builds their confidence in you as an organised employer.

During these days, you're basically saying: "Observe, absorb, and try slowly." You're like a trainer with a new apprentice: first they watch, then do a little with supervision. Keep feedback balanced — notice what they did right ("I like how you remembered to ask about the dusting of the bookshelf, well done") as well as what to adjust.

(See the checklist below for a summary of Days 2--3.)

Let the new hire observe how things are done, step by step.

If possible, pair them with an experienced staff member for shadowing.

Be patient with mistakes; correct calmly and immediately, without raising your voice.

Introduce any written notes or task cards — this gives a reference point and signals that it's okay to not memorise everything at once.
