The Triangle of Trust
Every home operates within an invisible triangle connecting:
The Family (Employer) — sets overall values and expectations
The Lifestyle Manager (LM) — bridges the family and staff, manages day-to-day
The Staff — execute tasks and uphold the home's rhythm
If one leg of this triangle feels undervalued or overly controlled, the whole system becomes unstable. Your role as an LM or homeowner is to keep this triangle balanced. That means:
Build transparency without gossip. Everyone should know where things stand, but never by hearing whispered half-truths.
Elevate dignity without losing structure. Treat everyone respectfully and hold clear standards.
Mediate issues without taking sides. Be fair; focus on the issue, not personal loyalties.
When those in authority (family or LM) demonstrate empathy and fairness, it actually mitigates power imbalances. In workplaces with lower power distance (i.e. less rigid hierarchy), communication improves and psychological safety grows (Metcalf, n.d.). In a home context, that means staff are more likely to voice concerns or ideas rather than silently stewing or saying "yes" out of fear. By keeping the trust triangle strong, you create a foundation where everyone can rely on each other.
